News from the Studio: Winter 2014

It has been a cold winter, with moments of good pond hockey and cross country skiing. These past few months I have stayed put in the Northeast, but I am looking forward to being in London and Alberta, Canada in the coming months. I have had a number of interesting assignments photographing in New York, most recently with the French documentary agency "Elle est pas belle la vie", photographing Hurricane Sandy reconstruction and more on New York City rooftops in the winter. It was amazing to see the new housing construction on Breezy Point, basically a sand bar on the Long Island shoreline. You have to wonder how these new buildings are being insured, in all respects.

In the coming year I am looking forward to working on projects related to climate change: photographing urban parks for an upcoming publication and documenting the proposed routing of the XL Pipeline, beginning with the mining and tar sands in Alberta, Canada to the refineries on the Gulf coast. These two photographic projects focus on constructed environments with opposite effects on climate change.

More recently, I am pleased to announce an upcoming exhibition at the Beetles + Huxley Gallery in London. The show, titled "Aerial Perspectives," will be displayed from March 3 - 29. Promotion for the show has been featured on The Telegraph news website, Buzzfeed, and Yahoo UK. For a look at the complete set of works to be shown, click on the picture below. If you should have friends in London, I hope you will pass this information along.

In other news, the 25th Annual MassArt Auction will include my image "Cut Flower Fields, Carlsbad, CA". The auction will be held Saturday, April 12. It is the school's largest fundraising event, and I am happy to be a part of it.

The August Issue of Architectural Record featured my image of Jacob Javit's Plaza in New York. The image was accompanied by an article about the beautiful renovation, designed by Michael Van Valkenburgh.

I would also like to announce our updated online archive, which now features a selection of my work with an emphasis on planning and environmental issues. Many of these images can also be found in university visual collections, and offer an insight in to best and worst practices regarding our built and natural environments. This archive is powered by PhotoShelter, and can be viewed through the link above. I have also expanded my social media presence to Instagram, and will be posting both new and old images regularly.

Lastly, Ryan Arthurs is now teaching photography at Harvard. Taking his place as studio manager is Mary Ball (mary@landslides.com) who has a strong background in photography and environmental science.

I am looking forward to being in touch with many of you in the coming year.

Best,
Alex
